Pythia of Media Speaks:People go Hungry

Watch out world, Oprah Winfrey is on a diet again and things are getting crazy.

When most people go on a diet they just go out and buy a bunch of diet books and laxatives then sign up at gym where they can get healthy snacks like strawberry smoothies and maybe exercise a little bit. But when Oprah goes on a diet it’s a much bigger deal because, of course, she is like The Delphic Oracle of millions of people who need her to tell them how to live .

Now I never knew the real Oracle of Delphi so I cannot say with any degree of certainty if she was any wiser than the current Miss Pythia of Media. But I wonder if Apollo would approve of Oprah’s oracular performance when last week, in response to some inscrutable mutterings by their oracle, tens of thousands of people who thought she was telling them how to lose weight crashed her servers trying to download coupons for free food from Kentucky Fried Chicken. But wait, things get weirder.

Armed with these coupons, Oprah’s acolytes rush into KFC stores all over the United States and wipe them out of grilled chicken. Store managers had to turn people away. Now many are upset because they could not get their coupons or free chicken so they can lose weight like Oprah.

It’s all so confusing. This might clear things up.

This is almost too stupid to print

So far the H1N1 influenza virus has not been found in pigs. But that is not stopping the Egyptian government from slaughtering all of the pigs in Egypt. Their bodies will be burned or buried and the largely poor and Christian population that depends on them for food will have to find something else to eat. Of course, that won’t be too difficult because a large number of the poor who raise pigs are garbage collectors.

Egypt orders slaughter of all pigs over swine flu

This is fraking crazy and cannot be interpreted and anything other than an expression of contempt for pork (and pork eaters). At the very least, it is an out of the ballpark overreaction.

Ancient Nazi cattle species re-introduced to Britain

The title of the this post is accurate. The auroch or something very close to the auroch is now roaming fields and woodlands somewhere in Britain after having gone locally extinct sometime during the Iron Age (circa 800 BCE) thanks in part to the efforts of Luftwaffe leader Herman Goering.

It seems that apart from being a thieving, drug addled war-mongering Hitler wannabe, Goering was in every other respect a typical Nazi party big shot in that he pined for the days when the mythical Aryan people lived as hunter gathers in the primeval forests of the Fatherland. So he set up a back breeding program to recreate some of the real animals that the imaginary Volk had hunted to extinction (Or did the Nazis blame some other group for the demise of native species? I’ll have to check on this.)

Now for the price of about 600 half-liter plastic bottles of water, you can prevent 600 half-liter plastic water bottles from entering the waste stream and look totally hot with this $90 canteen from US Canteen.

This has been a public service announcement by A Hunger Artist.

Child Labor is Not Kosher (Apologies to M. Pardus)

I know that knowing who is raising and slaughtering the animals for meat is no guarantee that what you buy will have been raised and processed in an ethical manner. However, it stands to reason that if you do buy your meat from a primary producer and you discover that he/she is abusing workers or animals you’d do something about it straight away, right?

Of course you would.

The news that “the nation’s largest kosher meatpacking plant [was charged] with more than 9,000 misdemeanors alleging child labor law violations” should be seen as a reminder that the best way to ensure that your food is produced in an ethical manner is to be as directly involved in it’s production as is possible and practical.

Goodbye

It’s another rainy day here in Pennsylvania, but it feels like it’s raining all over the world. It was raining and hailing yesterday when I learned of the death of Richard Ruhlman, Michael Ruhlman’s dad. I knew that Michael’s dad was ill, but it was still a shock to read that he had passed.

And just now I read that the man behind the voice of South Park character Chef, THE Soul Man (Yeah, he wrote the song.) Isaac Hayes, has died at the age of 65.

I also discovered today that Dorian Leigh Parker, who greatly encouraged me to become a chef when it was not at all clear to me what I was supposed to be doing, died in July in a nursing home at 91 from Alzheimer’s. The world will most likely remember Dorian as the glamorous fashion model who may or may not have been the inspiration for the Holly Golightly character in Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s, but I remember her as a fabulous cook and a kind and charming life teacher.

Sigh.
